Sabra C. Slaughter, Ph.D.
Sabra C. Slaughter, Ph.D., is the Chief of Staff to the President of the Medical University of South Carolina. He also holds the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine in the College of Medicine. As Chief of Staff to the President, he is responsible for assuring the daily operation and integration of the many functions of the President’s office. Dr. Slaughter received his doctorate degree in psychology in 1985 and his master’s degree in psychology in 1977, both from the University of Michigan. He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1973.
Dr. Slaughter’s professional association with South Carolina began in the mid-1970’s when he participated in Gullah culture research on Daufuskie Island. He continued ongoing research efforts involving the Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia until 1985 when he came to Charleston as project director for the ASSIST Program, a faculty development effort launched by the Charleston Higher Education Consortium. Dr. Slaughter also directed an innovative, community-service-based project to boost minority enrollment in post-secondary educational institutions.
His career with South Carolina AHEC began in 1988 when he was appointed as director of the Office of Minority Programs. For the next five years he and his staff worked to recruit minority students into the health professions and build the competencies that would help them succeed in health career education tracks. He also directed the MUSC Office of Minority Affairs for the 1992-93 academic year. In 1994 he was appointed South Carolina AHEC’s associate executive director and as executive director in 1996. As of January 1, 2000, Dr. Slaughter assumed his current role of Executive Assistant to the President.
His academic and research efforts parallel his administrative career. His bibliography includes numerous publications on topics ranging from community health planning to the use of continuous improvement strategies in health care education.
Dr. Slaughter is married to Shannon Emily Richards and is the father of two daughters: Elease Lydia Slaughter and Ginneh Rose Slaughter.
